When a young man first steps into our Skill Development Workshops, you can almost see the battle going on inside him: "What if I mess up? What if they laugh?" We know that feeling well, because many of us have stood in that same spot, voice shaking, wondering if anyone would ever take us seriously.

In our Public Speaking Skills sessions, we start right there. We don't throw youth on a stage and critique them. We walk with them. Short, guided exercises help them practice eye contact, body language, and how to tell their story with strength instead of shame. They get real-time encouragement from mentors and peers until they begin to hear their own voice and think, "I can actually do this."

Creative Problem Solving moments often happen around a simple challenge: "Your friend is in trouble at school. What now?" or "Your crew has a great idea, but no money. What's the first step?" Youth work in small groups to brainstorm, debate, and test different paths forward. They learn how to think beyond "fight, flight, or freeze" and start planning with a clear head-skills they can use in school, work, and at home.

Teamwork and Collaboration comes alive when we see a quiet kid step up and guide his group through an activity, or when two young men who used to argue end up on the same side, planning together. Through trust-building games, group projects, and honest debriefs, they practice listening, sharing responsibility, and handling conflict without tearing each other down.

These workshops grow more than skills-they grow identity. Young people begin to see themselves not as "the troubled kid" or "the shy one," but as leaders with something worth saying, a mind worth trusting, and a team worth fighting for in Milwaukee.
